The Island of Buda mirrors the rich history of the design-oriented city of Kortrijk. The BUDA factory accommodated in a former textile dyeing plant aims to provide generous spaces for cultural activities at the lowest cost possible. Two pentagonal hollow spaces built of yellow brick – one inside, one outside – ensure light, space and inspiration. The inside pentagon juxtaposes studios, exhibition areas and workshops and culminates in a rooftop terrace. Already existing brick surfaces were cleaned and renovated, woodwork and concrete columns were filled in.

Jury Statement, Vera Yanovshtchinsky, the Netherlands

It is an old factory and the architects made interventions with modern architecture. This project used brick the way we often use brick in the northern countries: as a far-developed, industrial, modular, perfect buildin product. The masonry, the way of building it, suits this building with the perfection of the material. The result, however, is not a traditional or common one. The result is unique, because what you get is a brick that makes a fabric almost with the quality of silk, where the color nuances are the most striking feature. It makes a harmonious combination, in terms of both space and material, between the old and the new. I find it a very beautiful way of creating harmony and tension at the same time; it combines what seem to be opposites into a new harmony. What really made a big impression on me about this building is the combination of intelligence and sensitivity. I have the feeling that they have reached the maximum result by using the material and the design in such a sophisticated way.
