Case study of the month: Hindman's Yard

Award-winning homes that can be found nestled in a quiet, residential area of London’s sought-after East Dulwich, and once frequented by artists and craftsmen in the days when the living space forms part of an industrial yard, it’s no surprise that Hindmans Yard has taken our case study of the month accolade!

The family homes now boast cutting edge design and were, unsurprisingly, the recipients of the 2016 Best Small Housing Development at the BDAs.  

The homes, which were built by Foster Lomas architects, use our Forum Smoked Prata facing brick, which worked to conserve the rich industrial history of the site whilst also providing some striking aesthetics to the homes. Two bricks were selected (the first, a standard 215 x 102.5 x 65mm, to set out the module for the facades; the second, an identical solid brick, hand cut and laid on site) to provide a subtle differentiation in texture and a softer, more consistent colour, making them suited for modern architecture where a colour consistency is required.

At Wienerberger, we always aspire to support regeneration projects that we consider to be an asset to the local area and Hindmans Yard is a prime example of how we strive to make building materials that will constantly innovate and provide ample aesthetic opportunities for architects to utilise.   Our brick was used to create a dog-tooth detailing which has been used as a motif throughout the project and incorporated into the patterned steel entrance porches – it’s striking visuals such as these that really take a project to the next level.

The homes at Hindmans Yard have been recognised for their striking aesthetics, which is in part thanks to the use of the Forum Smoke Prata; it’s always a delight to be part of projects that strive above and beyond and set an example for architecture.   The reason behind choosing our products was to contrast with the existing untouched perimeter walls and the surrounding urban dwellings of industrial red and yellow London brick stock houses with rough garden walls; to make the homes really stand out.  

The overall project was innovative and supportive of the community; a once derelict space was transformed into a contextually driven, high-quality example of sustainable architecture for residential use.
