Case Study

Sandford Lodge

In the heart of Dublin, Sandford Lodge Apartments represents a benchmark for sustainable urban development. Through innovative application of wienerberger's Bronsgroen brick, Shay Cleary Architects have created a residential development that fuses environmental responsibility with architectural excellence.

The project's distinctive character stems from its holistic approach to sustainability, where wienerberger's materials play a pivotal role. The use of the Bronsgroen brick demonstrates how traditional materials can be reimagined for contemporary environmental challenges. These elements work together in harmony to reduce the development's carbon footprint while creating visually striking facades that enrich Dublin's urban fabric.

The material palette was crucial in achieving sustainability goals. wienerberger's Bronsgroen brick, enabled developers to create a building envelope that is both environmentally responsible and architecturally expressive.

The development's environmental strategy extends beyond material selection. High-performance glazing interfaces seamlessly with the brickwork, while integrated solar photovoltaic systems complement the thermal mass properties of the clay materials. This technical sophistication is matched by thoughtful architectural detailing that elevates the building beyond environmental performance alone.

What sets Sandford Lodge apart is the successful integration of sustainable technology with aesthetic refinement. The Bronsgroen brick facades create a sophisticated urban presence, their tonal qualities and textural depth ensuring the building contributes positively to its context despite its considerable scale. The jury at the 2024 Brick Awards recognised this achievement, praising how the project demonstrates "architectural excellence... both in a rigorously clear concept design and in the beautiful realisation in bricks and mortar.”

Sandford Lodge exemplifies how wienerberger's products can facilitate architecture that addresses contemporary environmental challenges without compromising design quality. Through thoughtful material application and technical innovation, Shay Cleary Architects created a development that sets new standards for sustainable urban living while enriching Dublin's architectural landscape.

Through thoughtful material application and technical innovation,

Shay Cleary Architects created a development that sets new standards for sustainable urban living while enriching Dublin's architectural landscape.

Shay Cleary Architects said: “Taking its cue from the predominant material of the surrounding context, the scheme proposed that the primary material be a light buff colored brick with flush pointing in a stretcher bond format.  Bronsgroen was chosen because there are large areas of wall arising from the highly articulated building form, and the choice of brick adds texture and visual richness to these surfaces.

“The material is complimented by the careful detailing of precast copings and capping to create a sophisticated and highly contemporary aesthetic.  The selected materials are nonetheless highly robust and will age and weather gracefully.”
