Sylvester Street, Sheffield

Alongside significant improvements to the public realm, this former brownfield site is now a lively environment in which to live, work and play.

This mixed-use, residential-led development on Sylvester Street is a vibrant new city centre hub comprising 335 new build-to-rent apartments and extensive community facilities including concierge, resident lounges, roof terraces, private dining room , co-working space and ‘sky’ gym.

Once occupied by a melting house, the site is located within the Cultural Industries Quarter Conservation Area on the outskirts of the city centre and alongside Porter Brook. Historically, this area played a pivotal role in Sheffield’s industrial past, housing small but thriving businesses associated with the steel trade such as cutlery- and tool-making. During the 1800s, Porter Brook was utilised to power industry, leading to the emergence of larger scale industrial buildings such as Sylvester Works, Thomas Ellin, and the Oak, Stella, and Crown Steel Works. By the end of the 20th century, however, the decline in Sheffield’s metalwork industry resulted in the clearance of the Crown Steel Works and its surroundings, leaving the site empty for a number of years.

The revitalised site is now home to PLATFORM_’s build to rent apartment community which complement the area’s prevalent architectural style. Ranging in height from six to 14 storeys and featuring expansive windows set within a crisp gridwork of brick, homes are afforded enhanced levels of natural light and views over Porter Brook. PLATFORM_ also incorporates 7,650 sq ft of retail and commercial space at ground floor.

With numerous mixed residential and workshop buildings in the area, PLATFORM_ was conceived as an industrial courtyard building. The new buildings are arranged on three sides, with the fourth face comprising Sylvester Works, a three-storey former cutlery works and listed building.

The significant improvements to the public realm include a new footpath which runs through the site, connecting Sylvester Street to Mary Street. This enhances permeability and links to a new cycle path along Porter Brook. This important waterway, which had been partially culverted, is now opened up, providing a new destination for residents and the wider community.

The re-imagined public realm utilises materials recovered during site remediation. The council, along with a local artist, incorporated street furniture and artwork around the newly formed cycle/footpath, which runs along Porter Brook and includes a viewing platform over the waterway.

Contractor Winvic has constructed PLATFORM_ using a steel frame for efficient construction and lower embodied carbon in comparison to concrete. The façade is made up of three types of red brick with projecting piers, soldier coursing, and header features, ensuring that the external aesthetics are in keeping with the surrounding area.

Planting along the edge of the brook improves biodiversity and ecology. Boulders and rocks introduced within the brook slow the water flow and reintroduce habitats for wildlife.

The transformation of the site pays homage to Sheffield’s industrial heritage while creating modern amenities and enhanced public realm for residents and the wider community.
