The Paddocks, Bramley

The design and elevational detailing evolved from scratch as new house types were created and designed to deal with the location and the aesthetic for traditional farmhouse/barn style homes.

The Paddocks is a selected development of just four detached homes set in a semi-rural lane in Hampshire. The architectural brief was to consider how the homes sat in the lane, the ultimate curb appeal given the leafy location and how could Castlethorpe Homes sit these new homes in the location and ask them to ‘fit’ from day one.

The appropriate design response was to have an aspiration to fully consider the external material treatments as the main priority for the development with the landscaping, paving and paths intertwined with the brick choices, elevational treatments, detailing and roofs.

Over 30 bricks were viewed and considered, and samples taken to site to compare to other older local properties, The Wienerberger Heritage Blend brick was selected (and approved by the local authority and design officer) and in particular the mix of colours, texture and contrast played well with the black timber boarding prevalent locally on barns and farm buildings and replicated at The Paddocks elevations.

Architecturally a double brick plinth was added externally as well as chimney brick detailing, bands, and low-level hips. The heritage blend brick was also used INTERNALLY with a herringbone design inside the fireplaces to keep a traditional look running through these new homes. When looking at the elevations and materials, the brick was complimented with a specific mortar colour (with additives) to ensure a perfect match to the local vernacular and pointing done in a way to ensure uniformity of the finish.

A Sandtoft Village PT Reclaim roof tile was chosen to bring the full material collection together with its deep red/brown contracts matching perfectly to the brick choice. The roof had integrated Velux roof windows and Photovoltaic panels and the whole development was a benchmark for sustainability as an A rated EPC site and meeting 2025 future homes standards.

To keep the styling and desired look and feel of these traditionally designed homes, a modern black aluminium clad window and curtain walling system was used to bring light into the homes and scale to the externals and have the solid look.

In addition to the obvious visual items Castlethorpe Homes added Bee Bricks in the Heritage Blend Brick and matching Sandtoft bat tiles to the garage roofs, all garages and low-level house projections were in the same brick and tile to give consistence and flow.

The development was a combination of attractive choices of materials, picked specifically for The Paddocks and then blended and softened with great external landscaping to give an attractive and distinctive finish to this highly sustainable and modern new build development but with perfect nods to a bygone, more traditional era. The home buyers and other suppliers have complimented the external finish as being the ultimate ‘new home’ but sitting in the landscape quietly matching the surrounding homes and historic buildings.
