At the end of 2022, we launched our biodiversity strategy, ‘Let’s Build with Nature in Mind’. This outlined our commitment to promote and protect biodiversity across our sites. A key theme of this strategy is building partnerships, and we want to highlight some of the exciting work happening as we collaborate with conservation organisations and charities to extend our impact.
Many of you may have seen our collaboration with Chester Zoo and their stunning new snow leopard exhibit. However, there is so much more happening with building partnerships both at our sites and within local communities.
A conversation with the RSPB
We have been diligently working to ensure our habitat creation and enhancement plans improve biodiversity on our sites and align with broader local conservation efforts, such as local nature recovery strategies. A shining example of the value of these partnerships is our work at our Broomfleet site, where we collaborated with the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) to restore our quarry lagoons, creating valuable wetland habitat for protected bird species.
Our Biodiversity Manager, Maisie McKenzie, recently caught up with RSPB Reserve Manager Pete Short at Broomfleet to discuss their ongoing work, how our strategy supports the restoration of this special site, and why it is important that companies like wienerberger work alongside conservation organisations. Here is a snippet of what Pete had to say.
Why is it important for private companies to partner with conservation organizations?
“Partnerships between private companies and conservation organisations like the RSPB are crucial for several reasons. Firstly, they bring together diverse expertise and resources that neither party might have access to independently. This collaboration enhances the scale and impact of conservation efforts. Secondly, it helps in creating sustainable business practices. When companies like wienerberger integrate environmental strategies into their operations, it sets a benchmark for industry standards, encouraging others to follow suit. Lastly, these partnerships raise public awareness about conservation issues, highlighting that economic development and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand. This can lead to a broader cultural shift towards sustainability and conservation.”
What is the most valuable thing about the partnership with wienerberger?
“It is our shared vision and commitment to biodiversity and environmental conservation. wienerberger’s proactive approach and willingness to integrate conservation goals into their business operations have been instrumental. This alignment allows us to combine resources and expertise, leading to significant improvements in habitat restoration and biodiversity at sites like Broomfleet.”
Can you give us an example of how our work within this strategy has supported the restoration efforts at Broomfleet?
“Our combined efforts have led to the successful restoration of quarry lagoons into thriving habitats for a variety of bird species. wienerberger’s commitment to providing the necessary funding and resources, coupled with our ecological expertise, has enabled us to create a sanctuary that supports both common and rarer species. The installation of new reed bed habitats, monitoring programs, and habitat management initiatives are just a few examples of how our strategy has translated into tangible conservation outcomes.”
The importance of our partnerships
Alongside our collaboration with the RSPB, Wienerberger has long supported various Wildlife Trusts across the UK. The Wildlife Trust is a federation of 46 independent wildlife conservation charities dedicated to protecting and restoring natural habitats and wildlife. Founded in 1912, The Wildlife Trusts manage over 2,300 nature reserves, conduct scientific research, and engage in advocacy to influence environmental policy. wienerberger has been a corporate sponsor or project supporter for local Wildlife Trusts in areas where we have sites.
This support from private organisations is crucial for the Wildlife Trusts as it provides financial support and resources to advance conservation efforts. These partnerships enable The Wildlife Trusts to fund specific projects, enhance habitat restoration, and protect wildlife while also raising public awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainable business practices.
