Row of modern cream brick terraced houses with row of trees and blue sky

Modern terraced house designs

See how architects across the UK are re-imagining traditional terraced houses with contemporary designs that are functional and beautiful.

1. Seven Acres

Seven Acres reimagines the traditional terraced house for the modern day, tackling the ever-present challenge of sustainable design for a net-zero future. These 128 new homes, using Marziale bricks and oak timber, won a host of awards including Ideal Home of the Year Award at the Blue Ribbon 2013 Awards.

The site is centred around a communal park and children’s playground, while the homes are designed with sustainability as a priority. Strong insulation, managed ventilation with heat recovery, triple glazing, photovoltaics, green roofs, and rainwater collection help mitigate the impact of this residential development on the environment.

2. Timekeepers Square

Honouring the past without imitating it, Timekeepers Square is a bold reimagining of Salford’s urban landscape. Part of the Salford Central regeneration scheme, Timekeepers Square won a BDA award for Urban Regeneration Project & Housing Development of the Year, thanks to its striking contemporary aesthetic that nevertheless remains sensitive to the area’s heritage.

This development of 36 homes, neighbouring a Grade II* listed church and Georgian square, is inspired by the height and grandeur of Georgian townhouses. The colour and texture of Forum Smoked Branco brick offers a mediation between the red brick townhouses and sandstone of St Philip’s Church.

3. Barclay Court

In the grounds of the 18th Century Prospect House, this modern terraced house development had to complement the sensitive restoration of the historic building while providing contemporary, desirable modern homes.

While Prospect House was converted into six luxury apartments, the acre around it was developed into nine new houses. The warm yellow clay of Marziale brick, paired with grey mortar, mirrors the cream finish of the historic building. The variations of colour and texture in Marizale conveys the impresison of being a weathered, slightly distressed traditional bricks, contrasted with the buildings’ striking modern design.

4. Cartridge Close

Comprising 17 three and four-bedroom homes, with stunning views across Portsmouth Harbour, this waterfront heritage development is surrounded by the ramparts that were part of the original fortifications of Priddy’s Hard military installation. The site was once hoe to an ammunition manufacturing facility, hence the name Cartridge Close.

On completion, each low carbon, smart home generates its own electricity through solar panels, which helps to minimise the running costs by 75% when compared with a normal house.

5. Forest Mews

This radical re-think of a traditional mews terraced design centres around a multi-functional communal outdoor space shared by three residences. Forest Mews strives to bring the outside in, with large windows and airy interiors that let natural light flood in.

Marziale brick was the perfect material to reflect the aesthetic of the surrounding houses dating back to the reign of Queen Victoria, while delivering the Mews’ unique visual appeal. The facade of the building is covered in expanded metal mesh, allowing plants to climb and encase the buildings in green. As the years progress, this small community will become a lush oasis among its terraced neighbours.
