Decarbonisation

Achieving whole lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions reductions by transitioning away from fossil fuel-based energy sources and optimising our raw materials.

Why is this important?

Greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activity are the primary contributor to global warming and the climate crisis.

Our ambitions for 2030

We will have set a Science Based Target and established a net-zero (Scope 1 & 2) ceramic production line as a key milestone towards achieving net-zero emissions before 2050.

Making this happen

  • We have verified our Scope 1 & 2 emissions to establish our baseline.
  • We have developed a carbon reduction plan outlining how we will reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
  • Decarbonisation workstreams will continue to implement our roadmap actions, including fuel switching, new product and service development, and trialling production technologies which reduce energy consumption.

Baseline Emissions

Wienerberger Ltd.’s baseline year is 2020, in line with carbon emission targets set by Wienerberger AG. Given that production was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the results for 2019 are also published for context.

Carbon Emissions Reduction Trajectory

From our baseline year of 2020 to our last reporting year of 2022, we have seen a decrease in both Scope 1 (1%) and Scope 2 (10.5%) emissions respectively. Together, these equate to a 1.7% reduction in carbon emissions since 2020, and 11.1% since 2019. As discussed in Baseline Emissions, 2019 is considered a more representative year.

What's next?

To build on successes achieved so far, wienerberger is planning two significant capital investment projects and research into alternative raw materials. These consist of:

  • Installation of an Electric Kiln at our Broomfleet site
  • Waste heat recovery and fuel switching at our Warnham site
  • Continued development of lifecycle assessments and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
