IBC repurposed to conserve resources

Closing the loop on IBCs through reconditioning and material recycling

In 2021 wienerberger Sandtoft and Goxhill returned over 800 intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) to the Schütz Ticket Service

wienerberger’s Sandtoft and Goxhill sites use paint and additives for roof tile manufacturing, which are delivered in IBCs. To conserve natural resources, wienerberger joined the Schütz Ticket Service which prevents these IBCs going to waste.

The Sandtoft and Goxhill sites arrange collections of empty IBCs, which are returned to Schütz’s recycling units (ISO 14001/ISO 9001 certified). At the recycling units, the IBC steel grids and pallets are cleaned and reconditioned. All components that come into contact with the filling goods (such as the inner bottle and screw caps) are replaced with new components. The recovered inner bottles are shredded, washed a closed-cycle cleaning process and ground into a pure HDPE granulate. The granulate is reused in the production of pallets, corner protectors and other plastic product components. The reconditioned Schütz IBC is then ready for reuse.

Compared with the production of new Schütz IBCs, wienerberger’s use of the Schütz Ticket Service has generated the following savings in 2021:

34 tonnes of steel

13 tonnes of plastic

81.3 tonnes of carbon emissions avoided
