Case Study

Moylinney Court

See how Wienerberger’s Con Mosso bricks helped deliver the finish required to match the surrounding context of Moylinney Court, a residential development in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland.

Comprising six family homes and 14 spacious apartments, Moylinney Court has achieved the prestigious HAPPI (Housing our Ageing Population Panel for Innovation) standard for its approach to design, wellbeing and sustainability.

Accessibility, inclusion and design for all is at the core of this project. High quality private homes include carefully considered interiors, putting health and wellbeing first with features such as natural lighting, highly efficient glazing and private balconies. The homes are complemented by communal social spaces, bringing residents and the local community together for neighbour interactions and local events.

The main building is split into three blocks, covering the length of the former nursing home site. These blocks house the two main apartment wings and a central core with double height spaces, floor to ceiling glazing and communal lounges.

A key element of the design was to finish the building with high quality durable materials, including Wienerberger’s Con Mosso brick, alongside cast stone, timber effect cladding and render. These materials were specified to create a monolithic design, with pockets of private space that integrates with the communal landscape and social areas. All while defining private terrace and balcony boundaries.

The site also delivers biodiversity enhancements through the planting of natural mature trees and shrubs, maintained through a management plan.

"The homes are complemented by communal social spaces,

bringing residents and the local community together for neighbour interactions and local events."

The Con Mosso brick was chosen by architects Hall Black Douglas due to its distinctive buff colour which, combined with complementary mortar, links with the surrounding context of render, pebble dash and brick properties. Moylinney Court is set within an area of social deprivation and 1970s social housing in Newtownabbey.

Oliver Pankhurst from Hall Black Douglas said: “The bricks were easy to work with and have delivered a beautiful finish. Close design team coordination and on-site attention to detail was a key part of the project, ensuring the delivery of a building that will stand the test of time.

“Everybody involved with this project is pleased with the final result, from the designer through to the client and the residents living at Moylinney Court.”
