Building the Future Together: Wienerbeger Joins the Future Homes Hub.

A Commitment to Sustainable Development

The construction sector, recognised as a significant contributor to global carbon emissions, is on a transformative path towards sustainability and Wienerberger is proud to contribute to this change through our partnership with the Future Homes Hub.

The Future Homes Hub represents a collective endeavour to meet the ambitious climate and environmental targets set by the UK Government, aiming for a net-zero future. This initiative aligns perfectly with Wienerberger's dedication to building sustainable, high-quality homes for future generations.

Ed Lockhart, CEO of The Future Homes Hub, encapsulates this mission, stating, "New homes are undergoing rapid change to be ready for the climate and environmental challenges of the 21st century. We have a collective responsibility to deliver the sector’s climate and environmental targets while building higher quality homes at the scale needed." Wienerberger echoes this sentiment, embracing the opportunity to contribute our expertise and solutions towards achieving these goals.

Pioneering Change Through Collaboration

The essence of the Future Homes Hub lies in its collaborative framework, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders to tackle various aspects of sustainable home building. From the Future Homes Standard to biodiversity net gain and water efficiency, the scope of topics addressed is broad yet focused on a singular vision: a net-zero future.

Our involvement in the Hub's Steering groups and Oversight groups allows us to directly influence and participate in key projects and activities. These include developing technical guidance, sharing best practices, and liaising with government and policy makers, among others. It's a testament to our commitment to not only adapting to future standards but actively shaping them.

Spotlight on Wienerberger's Contributions

Wienerberger's engagement with the Future Homes Hub is multifaceted, reflecting our broad expertise and commitment to sustainability.

Our Biodiversity Manager, Maisie McKenzie, will play vital role in the Biodiversity Net Gain Oversight Group. This group focuses on supporting developers to comply with biodiversity net gain requirements, enhancing placemaking through nature-positive approaches. Maisie notes, "Joining the Future Homes Hub BNG Group will enable Wienerberger to contribute to a huge positive step for the construction industry. By supporting developers in embracing nature-positive approaches and proving clear guidance on maximising the positive impact biodiversity net gain can have on a development, we can secure communities of the future, ensuring that we progress in harmony with nature and provide space for biodiversity”.

Similarly, Stephanie Palmer, our Head of Sustainability, will contribute her expertise to the Whole Life Carbon Oversight Group. This group aims to develop tools and guidance for the housebuilding community to address embodied and whole life carbon challenges. It's a crucial step towards meeting the 2023-2025 plan for reducing carbon emissions in new homes.

Looking Ahead: A Unified Vision for Sustainable Homes

As we move forward, Wienerberger's involvement with the Future Homes Hub continues to grow. We're exploring additional areas of contribution, such as the Future Homes Standard fabric group, which focuses on sharing best practices for building materials and techniques.

The journey towards a sustainable future is complex and challenging, yet immensely rewarding. Through our partnership with the Future Homes Hub, Wienerberger hopes to play a crucial role in creating a legacy of environmental stewardship and quality living for generations to come.
